WANTED: Are You Good With A Bell?

Salvation Army Bell Ringers

SEATTLE -- A familiar fundraising campaign is about to get underway at a store near you, and for the first time in many years, this holiday tradition is attempting to get back to its roots.

You know the sight, and you're certainly familiar with the sound of the Salvation Army Bell ringer. But did you know it originally wasn't a Christmas thing?

Captain Jonathan Harvey, who’s based in Seattle, says this tradition began with a member of the group standing on a dock in San Francisco, trying to raise money to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving.

Eventually, it turned into a Christmas tradition, but in recent years, the Salvation has paid people to ring their bells.

The man heading up bell-ringing efforts in Olympia is setting out to change that. Click on the picture above to hear the rest of the story.
