SEATTLE, Wash. -- The first week of July will bring fireworks AND a major sporting event to our area.

“You have to remember that this happens once every four years,” says Beth Knox, President and CEO of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games.

The big event begins July 1st in Seattle.

“This is really kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Knox tells KOMO. “It’s a national competition, and we’ve got 4,000 athletes and coaches.”

For perspective, that’s two times larger than the Goodwill Games Seattle hosted back in 1990.

Several local venues will be utilized, including Husky Stadium. Yet to put on an event of this size, Knox needed two things: Money and volunteers. She’s having luck in both areas, but still has work to do before the games begin in about three weeks. Click the photo above to hear the full story as it aired on KOMO Newsradio.
