Fraud Alert: Don’t get burned by a fake check scam
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Check fraud is a huge problem in this country. Fake checks – first-rate counterfeits that are nearly impossible to spot – are being used to commit all sorts of scams.
It’s estimated that as many as 500,000 Americans were burned by fake check scams last year, with the average victim losing about $1,200, according to a new report from the Better Business Bureau. Check fraud is “a huge problem,” the report says, with “millions of fake checks worth billions of dollars circulating every year.” Complaints to government agencies and consumer advocacy groups have doubled over the last three years.
