Multiple people injured after fire in Baltimore; Six children missing

BALTIMORE (WBFF) – Baltimore City firefighters were called overnight to a two-alarm fire at a Northeast Baltimore home that critically injured some of the occupants.

The woman who lived in the home on Bel Air Rd. and Springwood Ave. was mother to nine children at the home. Fire officials said Thursday morning that a women and three children were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Three victims were hospitalized in critical condition while one firefighter suffered minor injuries in the blaze which started at 12:32 a.m. Six children are unaccounted for and possibly inside the home still, several hours after the fire broke out.

“It’s a labor intensive process,” a fire official on scene said, adding that they expected to remain on scene searching for unaccounted children likely through the afternoon. When first responders initially arrived, heavy flames were seen coming from the first, second and third floors of the home before the second and third floors collapsed.

The children involved range from eight months old to 11 years old. Three of the nine children were able to escape but six are still missing. An excavator arrived around 8:30 a.m. to assist in search efforts, and will start at the top floor that collapsed - firefighters mapped out the home section by section in terms of debris that will be sifted through but conditions are so bad, they say it'll be tough to make entry.
