LYNNWOOD, Wash. - A suspect fired shots then carjacked a taxi cab Wednesday and led police on a wild high-speed chase through Lynnwood before heading south on Interstate 5 and crashing near Northgate.

The drama began around 1:45 p.m. with reports of shots fired in the Dollar Tree parking lot in the 13600 block of Mukilteo Speedway, said Courtney O’Keefe with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect then took off in the stolen taxi as deputies responded to the scene.

"We heard the gunshots while we were welding on top of that new building over there and then we were like, 'That sounded like gunfire,'" said one witness who was nearby.

"And all of a sudden we're looking around ... and we did see somebody come screaming down the center turn lane, turn right and go across all lanes of traffic, and then continued through the center turn lanes," the witness said.

Deputies spotted the stolen vehicle near I-5 and took off in pursuit. Speeds reportedly reached 90 mph as deputies chased after him.

At one point the suspect got headed the wrong way on I-5 and deputies terminated the pursuit.

Soon after, the pursuit was renewed and ended with a crash at the entrance of the southbound HOV lanes on I-5 near Northgate.
