Man shot during confrontation with Kitsap County deputies

NEAR OLLALA, Wash. - A man in his 70's is hospitalized after being shot during a confrontation with deputies in South Kitsap County Tuesday night, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's office.

Investigators said it began in the late afternoon with a domestic violence call from a home on Dove Lane.

The man's family called 911 saying was armed with a gun and needed mental help, and had left the scene in his SUV.

Deputies located the vehicle, then followed man and tried to get him to stop so they could get him professional help. But he refused.

Meantime the family was evacuated from the home in case he returned.

The man did return to the home around 4:50 p.m. and officers tried to confront him.

"While he was in the vehicle he did display a weapon in a threatening manner, both pointing it at himself and intimidating to officers who were on scene that he had that weapon," said Deputy Scott Wilson.

The man then tried to flee a second time by speeding rhrough a neighbor's yard, but deputies had set up spike strips near the homes.

He made it nearly a mile down the road on four flat tires before having to pull over and stop in the 8500 block of Banner Road. That's when gun shots were fired.

"What we don't know is what occurred next," said Deputy Wilson. "We know that there was shots fired."

Investigators don't know yet who fired shots.

The man was injured in the shooting. Medics arrived and rushed him to a Tacoma hospital. No word yet on his condition or the extent of his injuries.

No deputies were injured.

The Kitsap County Critical Incident Response Team is now investigating.

Banner Road was blocked in both directions for several hours while detectives investigated.
