Handcuffed DUI suspect dies after jumping off S.R. 520 bridge
SEATTLE - A man arrested for DUI early Friday is dead after he jumped off the S.R. 520 bridge while in handcuffs, the Washington State Patrol reports.
The bizarre incident unfolded at about 1:45 a.m. when a state trooper pulled over the suspected DUI driver, a 31-year-old Kirkland man, who was heading east on the 520 bridge.
After being placed in handcuffs, the suspect resisted arrest and refused to get into the trooper's patrol car. He then intentionally jumped off the bridge and into the chilly waters of Lake Washington.
The trooper attempted to grab the suspect and prevent him falling into the water, but was unsuccessful.
The Seattle Police Department's harbor patrol boat responded and found the suspect floating in the lake about 40 minutes later. The patrol crew pulled the man out of the water, and he was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident will be investigated by the Seattle Police Department.
Traffic on the 520 bridge is not affected.
