Bellingham Police arrest corrections deputy for sexual misconduct

Bellingham Police Department arrested a Bureau of Corrections Deputy of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office for custodial sexual misconduct in the second degree and intimidating a witness on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

On Jan. 8, Whatcom County Sheriff's Office received information regarding inappropriate conduct from the deputy, according to press release. After a review of the information, it was determined an outside agency should investigate, so Bellingham Police Department took over. The sheriff's office will conduct an administrative internal investigation.

"The Sheriff’s Office is committed to conformance with the highest standards of professional, ethical and legal conduct at all times and has a standard of no tolerance for instances of inappropriate treatment or violation of rules and regulations regarding interactions with inmates," the sheriff's department said in a statement. "It is of paramount importance to the members and leadership of the Sheriff’s Office that the public trust not be violated and that all persons are treated fairly and appropriately as we perform our daily duties."

The deputy was taken to Skagit County Jail and his first court appearance was Tuesday afternoon. He has been with the department since February of 2017.
