Read this before you book your next hotel room
Booking a hotel room? There are dozens of sites to choose from. Or are there?
As Checkbook.org points out, most of the well-known sites, such as Kayak, Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity, Trivago, hotel.com and booking.com are owned by just two companies, Bellevue's Expedia and Booking Holdings (formerly Priceline Group).
Checkbook’s researchers looked up more than 3,500 hotel rates on 18 different booking sites, plus hotel websites and found very little price variation.
"We found in our tests that we were rarely offered a different price across any of these different booking sites or even from the hotel when we tried to shop around,” said Checkbook's Executive Editor Kevin Brasler. “We just found the same price offered over and over and over again."
Checkbook’s advice based on its shopping experience: The only way to consistently save a lot on hotel rooms is by using the mystery deals offered by Hotwire (Hotwire Hot Rate) and Priceline (Priceline Express Deal). Checkbook found that on average, they beat the prevailing rate by about 38 percent.
