There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to spruce up the outside of your house. It also protects the wood and other surfaces from weather damage.

For a fast facelift, focus on the front door.

“Your front door is typically the focal point of your house,” said Rico de Paz, the paint expert at Consumer Reports. “You should use a semi-gloss finish. It stands out from the rest of the siding and it’s easy to clean.”

Choosing the right paint is important. Based on its testing, Consumer Reports recommends:

Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior sold at Home Depot and Clark & Kensington Exterior sold at Ace Hardware. Both outperformed paint that costs twice as much.

The Behr Premium Plus Ultra and the Clark & Kensington Exterior paints should last at least nine years, Consumer Reports says. Both resisted crackling, color change, dirt and even mildew.

On the other hand, America’s Finest Exterior sold at Home Depot and Olympic One Exterior sold at Lowe’s didn’t hold up over time in the magazine’s tests had the lowest ratings of all the exterior paints tested.
